Testing Whenomatic
Whenomatic is an app for phone automation: a rule is a trigger (“the charger goes in”, “7:00”, “the phone is shaken”) followed by steps (“show a notification”, “turn on the torch”). The idea is that setting it up is easy: start from a ready-made recipe, build a rule that reads like a sentence, or just describe it in words. Where it is not easy — a step you did not understand, a button you could not find — is exactly what we most need to hear about.
1. Join and install
- Your phone needs Android 13 or newer. Use the Google account you gave us for the test.
- Open the test link on the phone: play.google.com/apps/testing/app.whenomatic → Become a tester.
- Follow Download it on Google Play and install. If the page says the app is not found, wait an hour: a new tester is added with a delay.
2. Stay for 14 days
- Keep the app installed and stay in the test for 14 days in a row. Google counts testers who stayed; leaving early or uninstalling resets that for you.
- Open the app on most days, even for a minute. Google also looks at whether the app was really used.
- Updates arrive through Google Play as usual; please install them.
3. Feedback: private only
- Please do not post a public review or rating. A test build is unfinished, and a public review of it stays on the store page.
- Write to us instead, in any language you like:
- in the app: Phone → Settings → More → About → Report a problem (the letter already carries the app version and phone model);
- on the app's Google Play page, the Private feedback to developer section;
- or by email: whenomatic@gmail.com.
- A good report says what you did, what you expected and what happened. A screenshot helps a lot.
4. What to try, day by day
About ten minutes on each of these days. The order matters less than trying all of them.
| Day | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1 | Install, go through the two welcome pages and pick the group closest to you. Turn on one ready-made recipe. Was it clear what it will do? |
| 2 | Open the recipe library (the book icon on the Rules tab) and add a second recipe. When the app asks for a permission, read why it asks. |
| 3 | Build your own rule with + Rule: for example, when the charger goes in, show a notification with the battery level. Save it and plug the phone in. |
| 4 | In the editor of any rule press Dry run → Against the phone as it is now: the app shows what the rule would do right now, without doing it. Then try Play an event…, which pretends the trigger just happened. Did the result match what you expected? |
| 5 | Open the Assistant tab and describe a rule in your own words. Five requests are free. Did the draft do what you asked? (The assistant is not available in every country, for example not in Russia or Belarus, and only to people 18 and over.) |
| 6–7 | Use the phone normally. Then open the Journal tab: is each run of your rules there, and is it clear what happened? |
| 8 | Break a rule on purpose: turn off a permission it needs in Android settings, or make its condition impossible. Open Phone and Journal: does the app tell you which rule is broken and why? In the journal try Ask the assistant why. |
| 9–14 | Keep the rules you liked, change one of them, delete one. Open the app now and then. After a night: did the time rules run on time? |
5. Questions we would love answers to
- Your phone's brand and model, and its Android version.
- Did any rule not run when it should have? Which one, and at what time?
- Phones of some brands (Xiaomi, Huawei, Honor, OPPO, vivo, Samsung) stop apps in the background on their own. If yours is one of them, the Phone tab shows a card about autostart and battery. Did it help, and did the button open the right settings screen? We have only been able to check this on Google Pixel.
- Was there a moment you did not understand what to press or what the app meant?
- What would you want the app to do that it cannot?
6. What is not in this version
So that you do not look for it: this version does not read or send SMS, does not answer, reject or place calls by a rule, does not read other apps' notifications, has no geofences or background location, cannot tell which app is open, does not watch photos and videos, does not count steps or sleep, has no webhooks or plugins for other automation apps, and does not use Accessibility, root or shell.
